Do I qualify for a free NHS eye test?

You may qualify for a free NHS eye test at home in England if you are unable to visit an optician unaccompanied due to a physical or mental disability and meet any of the following criteria: 


  • Are 60 or over
  • Are registered as partially sighted or blind 
  • Have been diagnosed with diabetes or glaucoma 
  • Are 40 or over and are the parent, sibling or child of a person diagnosed with glaucoma 
  • Have been advised by an eye doctor (ophthalmologist) that you are at risk of glaucoma
  • Are a prisoner on leave from prison
  • Are eligible for an NHS complex lens voucher – our optometrists can advise you about your entitlement
  • Receiving benefits*
  • Entitled to, or named on, a valid NHS tax credit exemption certificate
  • On a low income and named on a valid HC2 (full help) or HC3 (partial help) certificate


*You're also entitled if you or your partner (including civil partner) receive, or you're under the age of 20 and the dependant of someone receiving: Income Support, Income-related Employment and Support Allowance, Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, Pension Credit Guarantee Credit, Universal Credit and meet the criteria (find out more at www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/UC)  

Do I qualify for help towards my glasses?

You’re entitled to an optical voucher for help towards your glasses if you:


  • Are a prisoner on leave from prison 
  • Are eligible for an NHS complex lens voucher – our optometrists can advise you about your entitlement
  • You receive Tax Credits and are named on a valid NHS tax credit exemption certificate (if you don’t have a certificate, you can show your award notice)
  • You or your partner (including civil partner) receive, or you're under the age of 20 and the dependant of someone receiving: Income Support, Income-related Employment and Support Allowance, Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, Pension Credit Guarantee Credit, Universal Credit and meet the criteria (find out more at www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/UC)
  • Have a valid HC2 certificate (certificate number and expiry date required)
  • Have a valid HC3 certificate (certificate number, expiry date and amount that voucher will be reduced by, are all required)

Private Sight Tests

If you do not qualify for an NHS home sight test, you are still eligible for a privately funded home sight test. This service is available at a cost of £60.
